Phlebotomy Trainees – A Big Job in the Hand


There are so many responsibilities on medical facilitators. There is no denial that any mistake by them can result in a blunder. However, there are no such cases, where there is a report on any such incidents. It is because so many efforts, which go in the training and the practical training also helps in making a perfect medical facilitator.
The institutes make sure that the students are able to make a difference, once they are out of the premises of the institute. So, effort from both the sides, from institutes as well as from students is required to make things work in a positive manner. Take the case of a phlebotomy trainer, the trainer needs to have practical knowledge about the same.
The phlebotomy training is one in which the trainer need to draw blood from patients or donors, who voluntarily donate blood to hospitals. The trainer needs to be extra sensitive; a single mistake can turn the game upside down. Therefore, an institute has to induct training and give as much as knowledge, which is required. However, the institutes need to permit the trainers to perform mandatory hours under the supervision of medical facility.
The responsibilities of a phlebotomy trainer are as follows –
  • To comfort the patients, make them feel comfortable. Make the patients aware of the procedures.
  • In a medical facility, it is required to draw blood from a patient, which is a high priority work, need meticulous and pins need to be put in the body in such a way that there is minimal pain to the patients.
  • The verification and identification of a patient need to be maintained by a phlebotomy technician, it helps in checking the record of the patients, if the patient had any ailment, which can affect in the future as well. These analyses help in the long run.
  • In case of a surgery or an emergency, the technician needs to make sure that all the things are in place. The needles, blood collection devices, gauze and cotton are some of the surgical facilities that need to be collected by a technician. There is no scope of any mistake by any sort; as phlebotomy certification is given to a trainer only when the trainee fulfils the mandatory working hours in phlebotomy.

Quality of training determines what you do in your medical career

There is so much of responsibility on the shoulders of medical staff; they are the ones taking care of the patients with utmost dedication, helping doctors, and much more. Any discrepancy in the service would lead to hazardous effect on patients. Therefore, medical staff needs proper training and they need to be aware of each and every thing before operating on human lives.

Take the case of a phlebotomy technician, in this, a technician has to deal with blood sampling, and testing. The blood may be used for donation purposes, for research purposes, or for any other purpose. The technician needs to be well trained in an institute, which takes care of the responsibility of imparting knowledge to its students. The institute needs to give practical knowledge to its students and mandatory duties need to be performed by the trainers –


  1. Verification – The verification of a patient needs to be done by a trainer with utmost care as it can help in revealing the past record of ailments suffered by a patient. This is kind of a screen test, where a decision is made to go with the process of drawing blood or not.
  2. Assembly of The Equipment’s –Drawing blood from the Human Body is a task; therefore, technician needs to pay special attention to the equipment’s to be used. There are number of equipment’s like needles, gauge, and blood collection devices etc., which are used in the process.
  3. Conversation with a patient- Conversing with a patient, when in action is an art. It is a tool, which can allow diverting the mind of a patient and letting the process at ease. This is the part of curriculum of phlebotomy training in institutes. This helps in making the patient feel comfortable and easing the pain of a patient.
  4. Collecting and preserving Blood –After drawing blood, the safe storage is also a priority. To make sure, things are in place, the blood collected in the collection devices needs to be preserved in a cool place for future usage.
  5. Puncture points – There are points in human body from where blood needs to be drawn. These points need to be press with a needle with as much care as it can be.

Phlebotomists – collecting the samples in the healthcare industry

Phlebotomy technicians, who are also known as phlebotomists, are always in demand. It is important job in the healthcare industry and you can be one of them after completing training. These professionals are needed in the hospitals, clinics, laboratories, blood banks and in nursing homes. They take these samples for test or any other medical reason, and the procedure of collecting samples is called venipuncture.

If you want to make a career for yourself as a phlebotomist, you can get phlebotomy training in a good institute. This training will train you to handle the different tasks of this field. After completing the course, you will be ready to help the patients at hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, laboratories or blood banks.
At the hospital or clinic, these professional have to do many jobs.

Their main task is to draw blood from a patient for various medical treatments or tests. They locate the right vein for the task, disinfect the place, insert the needle properly, and collect the sample in a tube or any other blood collection device.

It is their responsibility to manage the medical equipment for drawing blood. Equipment such as needles, tourniquet, gauze, cotton, and collection tube are handled by them.

Phlebotomist safely draws the blood and then tends the puncture. They also make sure that the puncture stays infection free.

After taking the sample, they store these samples for different tests run by the laboratories.

If they feel that the patient is not ready or nervous for the venipuncture, they try to interact with them and calm them. Patient must be relaxed for it and communication helps the phlebotomist here.

Sometimes these professionals also take vital signs of the patients, verify patient information. If working in the blood bank, sometimes they also handle the records of the donor.

It is their job to handle the samples and take them to the laboratories for further tests.

For pursuing career as a phlebotomy technician, you must have good communication skills, because you will interact with the patients. A phlebotomist must know how to convince and calm the person before drawing the sample. You must know how to work under pressure and for long hours. This job is full of responsibilities.

A phlebotomist is a trained individual who draw blood samples in a safe and right manner. This means, the phlebotomist is a specialist in medical laboratories who know how to take blood samples of the patients and dispose waste material and syringes to prevent contamination of blood.
