Phlebotomists – collecting the samples in the healthcare industry

Phlebotomy technicians, who are also known as phlebotomists, are always in demand. It is important job in the healthcare industry and you can be one of them after completing training. These professionals are needed in the hospitals, clinics, laboratories, blood banks and in nursing homes. They take these samples for test or any other medical reason, and the procedure of collecting samples is called venipuncture.

If you want to make a career for yourself as a phlebotomist, you can get phlebotomy training in a good institute. This training will train you to handle the different tasks of this field. After completing the course, you will be ready to help the patients at hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, laboratories or blood banks.
At the hospital or clinic, these professional have to do many jobs.

Their main task is to draw blood from a patient for various medical treatments or tests. They locate the right vein for the task, disinfect the place, insert the needle properly, and collect the sample in a tube or any other blood collection device.

It is their responsibility to manage the medical equipment for drawing blood. Equipment such as needles, tourniquet, gauze, cotton, and collection tube are handled by them.

Phlebotomist safely draws the blood and then tends the puncture. They also make sure that the puncture stays infection free.

After taking the sample, they store these samples for different tests run by the laboratories.

If they feel that the patient is not ready or nervous for the venipuncture, they try to interact with them and calm them. Patient must be relaxed for it and communication helps the phlebotomist here.

Sometimes these professionals also take vital signs of the patients, verify patient information. If working in the blood bank, sometimes they also handle the records of the donor.

It is their job to handle the samples and take them to the laboratories for further tests.

For pursuing career as a phlebotomy technician, you must have good communication skills, because you will interact with the patients. A phlebotomist must know how to convince and calm the person before drawing the sample. You must know how to work under pressure and for long hours. This job is full of responsibilities.

Jobs in this field are increasing with every day and phlebotomists are required in almost every health organization. After getting your certificate or diploma, you can get a job and the satisfaction of helping people.
